Nobody plans for an air conditioning breakdown in the middle of a New Jersey summer. It happens on a Saturday afternoon when it’s 95 degrees out, or right before a holiday weekend when the family is coming in from out of town. When it does happen, knowing what to do quickly matters.

What Counts as an AC Emergency

Not every AC problem needs emergency service, and it’s worth being realistic about that distinction. A system that’s running but slightly less efficient than usual is a problem worth scheduling during normal business hours. A system that has completely stopped cooling in extreme heat, particularly in a home with elderly family members, young children, or people with health conditions, is a situation that warrants an urgent call.

At Rostron Premium Home Services, our membership customers receive after-hours service as part of their plan. If you’re not a member and you find yourself in a genuine emergency, submit an emergency service request here or give us a call and we’ll do our best to get someone to you.

What to Do While You Wait

While you’re waiting for a technician, there are a few things that can make the situation more manageable. Close blinds and curtains on windows that get direct sun. Move fans to circulate air between floors. Avoid using the oven or other appliances that generate heat. If you have a basement that stays cooler, that can serve as a refuge during the hottest part of the day.

If you have a window unit stored somewhere in the house, now is the time to pull it out. It won’t cool the whole home, but it can handle one room and provide real relief.

What to Tell Us When You Call

When you call, it helps to have a few pieces of information ready. The age of your system, the brand and model if you can find it, and a description of what’s happening. Is the outdoor unit running but the air isn’t cold? Is the system not turning on at all? Is there ice on the lines? The more we know going in, the better prepared the technician will be when they arrive.

Why Summer Repairs Sometimes Take Longer

We are honest with our customers about this: summer is our busiest season and parts sometimes need to be ordered. We addressed this in detail in our post on avoiding AC downtime this season. What we can promise is that we communicate clearly at every step.

The best way to avoid a summer emergency is annual spring maintenance. Our membership program is built around exactly that.
