It’s a common assumption that a bigger air conditioner means a cooler home. In reality, an oversized system creates its own set of problems, and those problems are just as real as having a system that’s too small. Proper sizing is one of the most important decisions in any AC installation or replacement, and it’s something we take seriously on every job.
What “Size” Actually Means
AC systems are measured in tons of cooling capacity. One ton equals 12,000 BTUs of heat removed per hour. Residential systems typically range from 1.5 to 5 tons. The right size for your home depends on a specific set of factors, not a simple square footage calculation, though that’s where a lot of online tools start and stop.
What Goes Into Proper Sizing
A proper load calculation, sometimes called a Manual J calculation, takes into account the square footage of the conditioned space, ceiling height, the number and size of windows, the direction they face, the level of insulation in the walls, attic, and floors, the number of occupants, the local climate, and even how much shade the home gets throughout the day. What Happens When a System Is Too Large
An oversized system reaches the set temperature quickly, shuts off, and then starts up again shortly after because the home reheats just as fast. This is called short cycling. Short cycling means the system never runs long enough to properly dehumidify the air, which in New Jersey means your home can feel sticky and uncomfortable even when the temperature is technically where you set it. It also puts repeated stress on the compressor, shortening the lifespan of the equipment.
What Happens When a System Is Too Small
An undersized system runs continuously trying to reach a temperature it can’t maintain on the hottest days. On a normal day it may keep up fine, but when the heat and humidity peak, it falls short. Continuous operation puts wear on the equipment and drives up energy costs without delivering the comfort you’re paying for.
