Mini split installations have become one of the most requested jobs we do across Ocean County, and it makes sense when you look at the housing stock in this part of New Jersey. Older homes in Toms River, Brick, Lacey Township, and along the barrier island communities were often built without ductwork or with duct systems that were never designed with today’s cooling demands in mind. Ductless systems solve a problem that central air simply can’t address in many of these homes. For a side-by-side look at how the two options compare, check out our post on central AC vs. ductless mini splits for Jersey Shore homes.
What the Installation Actually Involves
A standard ductless mini split installation starts with the placement of the outdoor compressor unit. This is similar to a central AC condenser, and it needs a stable pad, adequate clearance around it, and proper electrical supply. Our electrical team handles any panel or circuit work required as part of the project, so you’re not coordinating between multiple contractors.
From there, refrigerant lines and electrical wiring are run from the outdoor unit through a small penetration in the wall to each indoor air handler. The penetration is typically about three inches in diameter and is sealed to prevent air infiltration. This is the part of the installation that requires the most thought in terms of routing, particularly in finished homes where access can be limited.
The indoor air handlers are mounted on the wall or ceiling of the space being conditioned. Wall-mounted units are the most common and are positioned high on the wall to distribute air downward across the room. Ceiling cassette units are an option for spaces where a wall mount isn’t practical or where a more discreet look is preferred.
How Long It Takes
A single-zone installation, one outdoor unit and one indoor unit, is typically a one-day job for an experienced crew. Multi-zone systems with two, three, or four indoor units take longer depending on the complexity of the routing and the number of zones being installed.
